Longtime residents and philanthropists Dave and Rita Roberts have donated $100,000 to North Liberty’s Centennial Park development. Their contribution supports the Next Stage campaign, which aims to transform Centennial Park into a dynamic community space.

The couple has a long history of active participation in the city, both on the civic side and citizen side.

Ms. Roberts, honored in the Community Hall of Fame in 2022, previously ran the North Liberty Flower Shop for over 25 years.

Mr. Roberts served as mayor for multiple terms between the 1970s and 1990s, and both have been active with local groups such as the North Liberty Optimists, frequently participating in community events like Blues & BBQ.

In recognition of their contribution, the Centennial Center’s kitchen and exterior concession window will be named in their honor. This gesture follows the naming of the Roberts Gymnasium at the North Liberty Community Center, which also pays tribute to their longstanding commitment to the community.

“The vision for Centennial Park is one of a beautiful community space for all ages and everyone,” the Roberts said. “We’re happy that we’re able to support the project to continue to help make North Liberty a special place.”

Construction of the Centennial Center, an indoor event space, outdoor amphitheater, and plaza, began in July, with completion anticipated by late summer 2025.

According to a release, city staff will curate a mix of public and private events at this hub of the entertainment park, booking craft fairs, author visits, business functions, weddings, community meals and nonprofit fundraisers.

Reservations for events from fall 2025 through 2026 are now being accepted at northlibertyiowa.org/centennialpark.

Phase one of the development includes the Centennial Center and amphitheater, park restrooms, an expansive plaza, and necessary utilities. Subsequent phases will introduce a splash pad, wheelchair-accessible playground units, additional restrooms, an open-air pavilion, and an honor garden.

The overall project, which aims to raise $3.5 million, has already secured over $2.4 million since its launch in 2023. The Centennial Park development is expected to generate $11.6 million annually, benefiting businesses across Johnson County and supporting future growth in the area.

“Dave and Rita Roberts have been steadfast in their support of North Liberty for decades. Their financial gift represents a substantial role they play in our community as well as their countless hours of volunteerism,” said Mayor Chris Hoffman.
