Darren Brown, founder and director of Tribulation & Trust Ministries and The Lighthouse Center, was named the Washington Chamber of Commerce’s 2024 Citizen of the Year at the Washington County Business Partnership Annual Dinner March 10, held at Riverside Casino & Golf Resort.
“Darren has spent years working to provide essential support, including emergency shelter, food, clothing, and counseling to individuals in need,” a release stated. “When Washington County lacked an official homeless shelter, Darren stepped forward with a mission to not only provide immediate relief but also to help people rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.”
Since opening its doors in 2019, The Lighthouse Center has become an important support system for hundreds of individuals and families in the Washington County area. In addition to shelter, it provides life skills training, financial guidance and a pathway to self-sufficiency for those facing hardship.
“Darren’s faith, perseverance, and visionary leadership have transformed this initiative into a vital community resource,” the release stated.
Mr. Brown’s commitment to sustainability also led to the founding of The Master’s Hand Thrift Store, ensuring the shelter’s operations remain independent of government funding.
“Darren’s impact extends far beyond The Lighthouse Center. He has illuminated the realities of homelessness in Washington County, inspiring others to take action and be part of the solution,” the release stated. “Through his unwavering faith and dedication, Darren has made an extraordinary difference in the lives of so many.”
Steele, Leppert recognized with 2024 Heart of Main Street Award
In addition to Mr. Brown, two more individuals were honored at the event that evening for their impact on the community.
Jena Steele and Wilson Leppert took home the 2024 Heart of Main Street Award, given to individuals committed to enhancing Main Street Washington.
Ms. Steele has been with Main Street Washington for two years and serves on two of the organization’s four committees.
“Known for her tireless work ethic and positive attitude, Jena is always the first to volunteer, the first to arrive, and the last to leave. Whether it’s supporting events, carrying heavy loads, walking miles during bingo, or simply offering a kind word, Jena’s infectious enthusiasm inspires those around her,” a release stated.
Mr. Leppert, a photographer and active Farm Bureau member, uses his talents to elevate Main Street Washington’s marketing efforts.
“Through his photography, Wilson has elevated our marketing efforts, beautifully capturing the energy and excitement of our events, from confetti-filled celebrations to candid moments that tell the story of our community. Though Wilson prefers to remain behind the camera, his quiet dedication and commitment to excellence are deeply valued,” the release stated.
In addition to his photography work, Mr. Leppert also serves on the Main Street Washington’s organization committee.
LUX Suites takes home 2024 Heart of Main Street Business Award
LUX Suites and its owner, Deana Delong, were the recipients of the 2024 Heart of Main Street Business Award, which honors businesses that bring vision and revitalization to the community.
When Ms. Delong purchased a building in Washington’s square, her goal was to create a dynamic retail space and elegant salon suites. After many hours of demolition, painting and restoration, she turned that vision into reality, adding two new destinations to the downtown district.
“Deana’s commitment to revitalizing the downtown area is evident in every detail of the project. With the support of a $25,000 DIG grant, she enhanced the building’s facade, creating a visually striking presence that draws attention and elevates the entire block,” a release stated. “Her efforts have not only greatly benefited her own business but have also inspired other local businesses to invest in their properties, contributing to the continued revitalization of our downtown.”
Beyond her business efforts, Ms. Delong serves on the Farmers Market Board and leads the Farm Fables book giveaway, which gives away 200 books to children each week throughout the market season.
