A Cedar Rapids restaurant with a longtime food truck presence is opening a brick-and-mortar location along First Avenue East.
Coyle’s Hibachi Grill, which has operated a food truck in a parking lot at the corner of Center Point and Glass roads since late 2021, is renovating the former Winifred’s restaurant at 3847 First Ave. SE, according to posts on their Facebook page. The longtime Cedar Rapids fine dining restaurant didn’t reopen after the August 2020 derecho.
Coyle’s Hibachi Grill has cultivated a dedicated Cedar Rapids following with their Teppenyaki Hibachi Japanese-style cuisine, featuring various hibachi entrees, crab rangoon, sushi rolls and deep-fried rolls, including the eponymous “Cedar Rapids roll.”
Plans call for Coyle’s new location to open later this month. Owners say they’ll also continue to operate their food truck when the new restaurant opens.
Tomaso’s moving to First Avenue East in 2023

Tomaso’s Pizza, a Cedar Rapids staple at 3234 Center Point Road NE for the past 27 years, will be moving to a new location in early 2023.
According to the Tomaso’s Facebook page, the restaurant’s lease at their Center Point Road location will expire in March 2023. Renovations are underway at the new Tomaso’s location at 2706 First Ave. NE, which has been occupied by several different businesses and political organizations in recent years.
“We are working on it every day…. But it needs a lot of love,” Tomaso’s owners said of remodeling and opening at their new location. “Our goal is March! We can’t wait!”
The new location will be nearly double the size of the Center Point Road location.
Tomaso’s also has locations at 1204 Seventh Ave. in Marion and 1061 N. Center Point Rd. in Hiawatha.
