Last week, Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity (IVHFH) finalized a real estate deal with the City of Coralville to acquire 708 9th Ave., where they plan to construct an affordable single-family home.

The organization has built multiple homes in Coralville in the past, Scott Hawes, IVHDH’s executive director, said, so when the city approached them about purchasing the lot, they were enthusiastically on board.

“We’re really excited,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of great success working with Coralville, and we look forward to engaging and serving the community.”

The land, most recently assessed at $31,000, was sold to the organization for $25,000. Groundbreaking for the new house is scheduled for late summer or early fall of 2025, said Mr. Hawes, and designs have not been solidified yet.

“It’s not a huge lot, so there are kind of some limits on what’s appropriate for that size,” he said.

The goal is to make the home as affordable as possible for low-income families and households and ensure payments are within their budget, Mr. Hawes said, and while they currently do not have a particular family in mind for the project, “our tentative plan is to work with a family for several months” once a qualified applicant is selected and a home design is in place, he said.
