Cedar Rapids, Iowa City Named to Livability’s Top 100 Best Places to Live

    Two Eastern Iowa cities were recognized on Livability.com’s annual Top 100 Best Places to Live list for 2026, highlighting the region’s appeal in affordability and quality of life.

    Iowa City, earned No. 31 spot nationally, while its neighbor, Cedar Rapids earned No. 33. 

    The annual ranking, which evaluates more than 2,000 U.S. cities, recognizes communities which offer a strong balance of economic opportunity, affordability and overall quality of life. Livability partners with Applied Geographic Solutions to analyze nearly 100 data points across eight categories, including Housing & Cost of Living, Economy, Safety and Education.

    “The phenomenon of ‘Iowa Nice’ is alive and well in Iowa City. The community of just under 78,000 is tight-knit, and the Hawkeye spirit is alive and well,” the website said.

    The ranking also highlighted Iowa City’s art scene and highly ranked medical care. With regards to affordability, it notes that the median home value in Iowa City is $294,270 and the average household income is $58,893.

    Iowa City’s “LivScore” was 722, up from its score of 709 in 2025.

    Cedar Rapids was specifically noted for ranking high in housing, affordability, transportation and safety.

    “The City of Cedar Rapids has been named No. 33 in the nation on the 2026 Top 100 Best Places to Live list released by Livability.com, recognizing the community’s strong balance of affordability, economic opportunity and quality of life,” according to a release from the city.

    Livability’s methodology for 2026 placed extra emphasis on housing and cost of living to reflect the current economic climate, only including cities with a median home value under $500,000.

    Cedar Rapids, with a population of 138,542, showed a median home value of $199,181 and received an overall “LivScore” of 719. Cedar Rapids 2025 score was 718. 

    The publication focuses on small- to mid-sized cities, stating they represent the “sweet spot” for residents seeking big opportunities without the typical hassles of a major metropolitan area.
