Van Meter held a groundbreaking ceremony April 29 for a major expansion of its regional distribution center in Cottage Grove, Minnesota, that will add 124,000 square feet to the facility and introduce robotics automation.

According to a news release, the Cedar Rapids-based electrical and automation distributor currently operates two Cottage Grove locations — at 7450 95th St. S. and 7601 100th St. S. — and employs approximately 205 people there. The expansion at the 95th Street site will bring the facility’s total footprint to 315,000 square feet and consolidate inventory management, order fulfillment, and wire and cable processing under one roof.

Van Meter will implement Hai Robotics automation as part of the project. Ryan Companies will serve as general contractor. Construction and automation implementation are expected to continue through 2027, with a full operational transition completed in 2028.

“This expansion is about building capacity with purpose,” said Nate Jensema, chief operating officer in a statement. “By combining additional space with intelligent automation, we’re creating a more efficient, scalable operation that supports our customers today while preparing us for what’s next. Just as importantly, we’re doing this in a way that maintains service continuity and enhances the daily experience for our employee-owners.”

Mr. Jensema added that safety and service continuity are the project’s top priorities during construction.

“This project represents a significant milestone for Van Meter and our confidence in the future,” said Lura McBride, president and CEO in a statement. “As an employee-owned company, we think in generations, not quarters. This investment reflects our commitment to our people, our customers, and the communities we serve — ensuring we’re well positioned to grow responsibly and deliver exceptional value for decades to come.”

Van Meter acknowledged support from the City of Cottage Grove, the Cottage Grove Area Chamber of Commerce, and the State of Minnesota in making the project possible.
