After holding a fully virtual event in 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Especially For You (EFY) Race Against Breast Cancer organizers are hoping to hold an in-person event Oct. 3.
“We’re pretty hopeful that we can get back out on the streets this year,” said EFY race director Jeff Decker. “But we are prepared to transition to a virtual event if it warrants it.”
For the 30th annual event, held virtually last year, there were 10,275 registrations, compared to 14,473 in 2019, the last time it was held in person. In 2020 more than $296,000 in registrations was raised for the fund, which provides financial assistance for breast and gynecological cancer screenings and services for area individuals in need.
Mr. Decker credits the community’s commitment to the cause for the success of last year’s modified event.
“This race really hits home to a lot of people in their personal battle with breast and gynecological cancer or maybe the battle of the loved one,” he said. “This is an annual remembrance of those loved ones who have passed on, or a celebration of the battles that have been fought and won.”
Since its inception in 1991, the Especially for You fund has helped more than 11,000 individuals access 24,000 services in Linn County.
