Best Florist & Place to Buy Wine/Spirits: Hy-Vee

Whether it’s fast flowers or a limited-edition bottle, Hy-Vee has become the go-to stop for busy professionals in the Corridor. The West Des Moines-based retailer operates 145 floral shops in seven Midwestern states, with each one offering FTD, wedding services and custom design work. Many employees in the floral departments also have advanced training. “We are a full-service florist,” said Rita Peters, assistant vice president of floral operations for Hy-Vee Inc. “In many of our stores, we are the only florist in town.”

In the wine and spirits section, the company has focused on offering a wide selection, competitive prices and superior customer service. Craft beer specialists complete a Cicerone Certification Program, which teaches them about different types of beer and how they are brewed. “The biggest reason Hy-Vee is successful is our customer service,” said Dennis Kron, wine and spirits manager at the Coralville Hy-Vee. “You have a lot of customers who come in that don’t drink very much and they need help making their selections.”
