Fareway Stores across Iowa are rolling out a new option for customers to purchase Powerball and Mega Millions tickets directly at the checkout counter – a first for the state.
Through a new initiative called Easy Play, developed by the Iowa Lottery, customers can now buy easy-pick lottery tickets in cashier-staffed checkout lanes.

The tickets, printed on receipt-style paper, offer a more convenient way for players to participate in the popular national games without needing to visit a dedicated lottery terminal or kiosk, according to a release.
“We are excited to partner with the Iowa Lottery to be the first retailer in the state to provide customers with the convenience of Easy Play,” Mike McCormick, chief retail officer with Fareway Stores, Inc. said. “At Fareway, the customer experience is a top priority and adding Easy Play will elevate that experience for our lottery playing customers.”
The Easy Play option is currently being introduced in select Fareway locations and will eventually expand to all Iowa Fareway stores that offer lottery products. Customers can purchase tickets with 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 plays for the next available Powerball or Mega Millions drawing.
Matt Strawn, CEO of the Iowa Lottery, said the new system aligns with evolving consumer preferences.
“Think of Easy Play as an express lane while the lottery terminal provides a full-service approach,” he said. “We recognize consumer expectations for convenience and are thrilled to be delivering that factor through this new process.”
While Easy Play tickets cannot include add-on features such as Power Play, Double Play or Megaplier, they can be checked and cashed at any Iowa lottery retail location.
The tickets are visually distinct, featuring the Easy Play logo, but meet the same security standards as traditional lottery tickets. They must also be purchased with cash or an equivalent payment method and will not be available at self-service checkouts.
Mr. Strawn noted that the development of the Easy Play system has been underway for several years.
