After three years in downtown Iowa City, Tru Coffee has closed its doors as of June 1.

According to a Tuesday evening Instagram post from owner Haley Kesterson, the coffee shop’s time at 287 N. Linn St. has “come to an end.” Although the post states that the future of Tru Coffee as a whole remains uncertain, the shop is “pausing to rest and reflect.”

“We’re incredibly thankful for the support of the community throughout the years,” the post reads. “Without it, we wouldn’t have been able to pursue our passion. As we look back on the memories we’ve made — the laughter among our baristas, the special events we’ve hosted, and all the conversations and connections over coffee — we’re filled with gratitude for this experience.”

Tru Coffee originally opened in June 2021, named after Ms. Kesterson’s late mother Trudi. The store served coffee from Dogwood in Minneapolis, Vertex in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Be Bright in Los Angeles, and sold a selection of vintage thrifted clothing.

Several community events were hosted in the North Linn Street space over the years, including a fashion show in spring 2023.
