Camp Courageous and Watts Group are set to announce a $5 million camper cabin project Wednesday that organizers are calling one of the most significant building projects in the camp’s history.

The public announcement is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, at the Watts Group main office, 425 E. Oakdale Blvd., Suite 101, Coralville. The event will also be livestreamed through Camp Courageous channels.

The project calls for a 21,000-square-foot camper cabin with 23 private rooms, each with an ADA-accessible bathroom and Murphy beds for both campers and caregivers. The facility would also include an atrium gathering space and a serving kitchen.

The vision for the project originated with former Camp Courageous Director Charlie Becker, who approached Watts Group about partnering on the build.

Organizers say the design was developed with the goal of giving campers with physical disabilities the dignity and privacy of individual spaces while improving accessibility for those requiring mobility assistance.

According to the release, accommodations of this type can determine whether some campers with physical disabilities are able to attend camp at all.

The total estimated cost is $5 million. Organizers are seeking contributions from community members, businesses and supporters to fund the project. Additional information about donation opportunities will be available through Camp Courageous following Wednesday’s announcement.

Camp Courageous, based in Monticello, is a year-round recreational and respite facility for individuals with disabilities and their families.
