Central Furniture Rescue named Rachel Cohen as its first chief executive officer, the organization announced Monday. Ms. Cohen will begin her role on April 27, succeeding founder and executive director Susan Johnston, who will step down later this year.
“We have been looking for someone who can see the bigger picture,” Ms. Johnston said. “Rachel will build relationships, lead development efforts and raise awareness while keeping a broader perspective. I’m confident Rachel will excel in this position.”
Ms. Johnston added Ms. Cohen’s hiring marks a planned transition for the organization. “We’ve been preparing for this moment for me as the founder to step away and make space for a new generation of Central Furniture Rescue. Rachel is going to thrive at CFR and make her own legacy here.”
Ms. Cohen’s background includes leadership positions in nonprofit development and communications. She previously served as the director of development and communications at the Catherine McAuley Center, annual giving director at Coe College, and director of donor development for Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc. Her expertise in strategic planning, budget development, and communications will inform her approach as CEO.
“Rachel’s career as an expert in nonprofit development and communications leadership exemplifies her preparedness for this position and her dedication toward helping those in need,” Johnston said. “Her expertise and fresh perspective make me excited to see what she brings to the organization and what she can achieve for Central Furniture Rescue.”
Ms. Cohen said her initial focus will be on increasing brand awareness and strengthening community partnerships, including highlighting the organization’s role in serving those experiencing homelessness.
“I have spent several years in the Cedar Rapids area, and there’s a lot to love,” Ms. Cohen said. “Central Furniture Rescue is the kind of organization that brings this community together. I’m eager to focus on development and securing consistent funding in order to reach a broader group of individuals and families experiencing homelessness.”
In addition to Ms. Cohen’s hiring, Central Furniture Rescue is onboarding several new board members to strengthen leadership and strategic direction. The nonprofit also plans to hire a chief operating officer to manage daily operations.
“The momentum is growing, and I can see things coming together. I know Central Furniture Rescue is ready for the next level,” Ms. Cohen said.
