Samsung Electronics is relocating within Cedar Rapids and expanding its research and development operations as part of a growth initiative supported by local economic development partners.
The South Korean tech giant has operated off Collins Road, where it has conducted ongoing testing on GPS location software. The company’s new facility will be situated in the Kingston Yard district, joining a growing cluster of businesses investing in the downtown corridor.
While specific project details remain confidential, the relocation signals continued commitment to the Cedar Rapids market.
“Cedar Rapids has consistently provided the resources and support we need to sustain our growth,” a company spokesperson said in a news release. “The economic development experts at the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance have made our decision to expand into a new facility and grow our team as seamless as possible.”
The Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance, in partnership with the City of Cedar Rapids, assisted in facilitating the expansion. The collaboration reflects a broader regional strategy to retain and grow established employers while driving job creation in the technology sector.
“We are thrilled to see Samsung Electronics stay rooted in Cedar Rapids and continue to grow here,” said Juliet Abdel, president and CEO of the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance, in a statement. “This expansion is a direct reflection of our focused strategy to build a thriving tech cluster in the Cedar Rapids region that has attracted more than $10 billion in historic state investment in recent years.”
Samsung’s move comes as Kingston Yard continues to attract investment. The area has seen more than $11 million committed to office and professional business space. Recent additions to the district include Big Grove Brewery & Taproom, entertainment concept Pickle Palace, and the forthcoming AC Hotel by Marriott, which will add lodging and conference capacity downtown.
Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell welcomed the announcement.
“Samsung’s decision to expand in downtown Cedar Rapids is a strong endorsement of our community’s momentum and our commitment to supporting innovation and high-quality job growth,” Ms. O’Donnell said in a statement. “We are proud to see global companies investing here and contributing to a vibrant, connected urban core that benefits residents, businesses, and visitors alike.”
Samsung Electronics ranks as the world’s fourth-largest technology company by revenue as of 2023. Its products include semiconductors, lithium-ion batteries, image sensors, camera modules, and displays.
