The Cedar Rapids Public Library Foundation received a grant from Variety – the Children’s Charity of Iowa for an adjustable-height changing table for the new Busse Branch.
The grant will fund a specialized changing table for a single-use restroom at the Busse Branch, which is expected to open in September 2026. The equipment has a 500-pound capacity and measures 76 inches in length, making it suitable for users of any age.
“An adjustable height changing table isn’t just a piece of equipment, it’s a statement that dignity, access, and belonging don’t end at childhood,” said Dara Schmidt, library director. “This aligns perfectly with our mission: Welcome to All.”
The adjustable table offers a safe surface for caregivers changing diapers or providing personal care, with the height easily adjusted to meet individual needs.
Natalie K. Clouse, a Cedar Rapids attorney and former Library Foundation board member, highlighted the importance of the equipment for families like hers. Her 7-year-old daughter, Gwendolyn, uses a wheelchair and diapers, making public changing a significant challenge.
“I wish people really understood just how something like this that seems so simple and such an easy addition to new buildings can be so impactful,” Ms. Clouse said. “This just takes away one of the barriers. It really just makes you feel like you’re welcome there. It says, ‘We want you here, and we want you to stay and hang out and have a good time.’”
A 2022 Iowa Disabilities report indicated that more than 60,000 residents over the age of five require assistance with daily activities, including using a restroom. Providing access to this specialized equipment allows individuals with disabilities and their caregivers to have longer, less stressful visits to the library.
Variety is a children’s charity dedicated to improving the lives of children who are underprivileged, at-risk, critically ill or living with special needs.
