ImOn Communications is replacing its last coaxial cable segments with fiber optic technology, bringing multi-gigabit internet speeds to remaining neighborhoods across the metro area.

The Cedar Rapids telecommunications provider network’s conversion, which began in June 2025 and continues through 2026, will deliver internet speeds of 2 gigabits per second and 5 Gbps to homes in Cedar Rapids, Marion and Hiawatha. The company has already installed fiber-to-the-home connections throughout most of the Cedar Rapids metro area.

The infrastructure project eliminates the company’s hybrid fiber-coaxial system in favor of an all-fiber network, positioning ImOn as the only provider with widely available fiber-to-the-home service in Cedar Rapids, according to the company.

“Our competitors offer hybrid networks, and that isn’t enough to meet the demands of modern households,” Patrice Carroll, ImOn president and CEO, said in a release. “As homes rely on more connected devices, cloud services and streaming services, fiber is the only technology that delivers the necessary speed and reliability.”

The 5 Gbps service represents the fastest residential internet option in the area, the company stated.

Cedar Rapids City Manager Jeff Pomeranz said the infrastructure investment supports economic growth and keeps the community competitive. “Reliable connectivity supports our residents and businesses, strengthening our community’s long-term economic growth while keeping Cedar Rapids competitive and connected,” said Mr. Pomeranz.

Following the Cedar Rapids conversion, ImOn will operate fiber-only networks across all its service territories, including the Iowa City, Dubuque, Sioux City and Clinton metro areas, plus Marshalltown and rural Southeast Iowa communities. The Sioux City market extends into Nebraska and South Dakota.
