Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity is starting construction on a new affordable home in Cedar Rapids, with support from a $35,000 grant from the Aegon Transamerica Foundation.
Volunteers from Aegon and Transamerica will begin building wall panels Wednesday, Sept. 17 at the construction site on C Street SW to launch the project.
“The need for affordable housing in our community is more pressing than ever,” said Brittany Scanlon, executive director of Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity, in a release. “Thanks to the continued support of the Aegon Transamerica Foundation, we’re not just building a house — we’re creating a life-changing opportunity for a local family to thrive in a safe, stable and affordable home.”
The project also serves as a cornerstone for Habitat’s Students Building Community internship program, which introduces local high school students to careers in skilled trades. Students will work at the C Street site weekly throughout the 2025-26 school year, gaining experience in carpentry, construction and teamwork.
“The Aegon Transamerica Foundation is proud to be a longtime supporter of Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity,” said Laura Wirth, head of corporate development at Transamerica and Aegon Transamerica Foundation board member. “Seeing Transamerica employees step up and turn that support into something more tangible — a home filled with hope — is incredibly meaningful.”
Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit Christian housing ministry that builds, rehabilitates and repairs homes in partnership with families in Linn and Benton counties.
