The Via Sofia’s restaurant at 1125 First Ave. SE has permanently closed its doors, according to a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

Known for offering pasta, pizza, salads, garlic bread and sub sandwiches at affordable prices, the Via Sofia’s on First Avenue was first opened by John Khairallah as Zio Johno’s in 1984 – the first Zio Johno’s in the state, according to Via Sofia’s website.

“In 1984, we could feed a family of 4 for under $15 – and we can still feed a family of 4 for under $15 today!” the website boasts.

Other Via Sofia’s locations at 5411 Center Point Rd. NE in Cedar Rapids and at 5312 University Ave. in Cedar Falls will remain open.

Zio Johno’s also continues to operate locations in Cedar Rapids, Marion and Iowa City.
