UnityPoint Health names chief medical officer for cardiovascular services

    UnityPoint Health has appointed Peter George as chief medical officer for cardiovascular services, the health system announced Dec. 18.

    Mr. George will provide clinical leadership and strategic direction for heart and vascular care across UnityPoint’s operations in Iowa and the Midwest. The health system operates St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids and other health facilities throughout the region.

    “Dr. George’s hands-on experience managing heart care for patients and his proven leadership in a large, complex health system make him ideally suited to lead our cardiovascular teams,” said Gregory R. Johnson, chief medical officer at UnityPoint Health, in a release. “We look forward to the expertise and vision he will bring as we continue to provide care across both urban and rural settings.”

    Mr. George will work with Sharese Van Sloten, vice president of operations for cardiovascular services, to address cardiovascular care needs across UnityPoint’s service area.

    “I look forward to partnering with the cardiovascular teams across UnityPoint Health to build a coordinated approach to heart care that ensures patients receive expert care close to home,” Mr. George said.

    Mr. George will join UnityPoint in February and practice in outpatient general, noninvasive and preventative cardiology. He currently serves as system vice president of acute care services for OhioHealth, where he previously held administrative and clinical leadership roles in the health system’s heart and vascular service line.

    He is board certified in cardiovascular disease with focus on outpatient general, preventative and noninvasive cardiology. George graduated from Ohio State University College of Medicine and holds an MBA from Ohio State University Fisher College of Business. He completed his cardiology fellowship at William Beaumont in Michigan, where he served as chief fellow in 1999-2000.

    At UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids, cardiovascular leadership includes Justin McDonald, administrative director of heart and vascular services, and Richard Kettelkamp, medical director at UnityPoint Clinic and St. Luke’s Heart & Vascular Center.

    UnityPoint Health, headquartered in West Des Moines, operates more than 400 physician clinics, 18 regional and 17 community network hospitals, community mental health centers, urgent care and express care locations and home care facilities. The health system employs more than 31,000 people.
