Cedar Rapids-based UFG Insurance marks eight decades of operations this year, growing from its 1946 founding into a national property and casualty insurer with more than 850 employees and partnerships with approximately 850 independent agencies nationwide, according to a release.

The company, which trades on Nasdaq under the symbol UFCS, was incorporated as United Casualty Company on Jan. 2, 1946, by founder Scott McIntyre Sr. The publicly traded insurer now operates across the United States while maintaining its Iowa headquarters.

UFG has undergone strategic changes in recent years to expand expertise across operational areas and enhance customer service capabilities. The transformation efforts aim to strengthen alignment with independent agents and address evolving policyholder needs.

“During my time at UFG, I have developed a profound respect and admiration for the people-centered culture and enduring values that shaped our company over the past 80 years and continue to drive us forward today,” President and CEO Kevin Leidwinger said. Mr. Leidwinger, the company’s sixth chief executive, noted progress toward improving financial and operational performance.

“It has been rewarding to lead UFG through our ongoing strategic transformation,” Mr. Leidwinger said.

Board Chairperson Jim Noyce, who has served on the board for 15 years, expressed confidence in the company’s direction.

“UFG has a proud history, an exciting present and a bright future ahead,” Mr. Noyce said. “For 80 years, the company has been committed to delivering on its promises to stakeholders and I’m confident that the work underway today is positioning UFG for its next 80 years of success.”

The anniversary year coincides with four decades of UFG trading on the public market, having listed on Nasdaq in 1986.
