The Halal Guys, known for its Middle Eastern cuisine with an American twist, will open its first Iowa location at 3220 Redhawk Street in Coralville.

The grand opening, set for Saturday, Dec. 21, will feature giveaways, including a free platter for the first 100 guests and prizes such as a TV, laptop, Beats headphones, a Nintendo Switch, and iPads. Visitors can also enjoy a coffee and hot chocolate bar, cake pops, and opportunities to win gift cards and merchandise.

“We’re excited to expand The Halal Guys to another state and join the Coralville community,” said Margaret Carrera, chief development officer of The Halal Guys. “We look forward to welcoming new fans to our restaurant as we introduce them to our delicious American Halal food.”

The Coralville franchise is owned by Ahmed Ahmed, Hassan Karoam, Asma Elmahdi, and Siddig Siddig, longtime friends who immigrated to Iowa over two decades ago. The group, all alumni of the University of Iowa, emphasized their deep connection to the local area.

“For us, it’s not just about food; it’s about celebrating the community that nourished us,” Mr. Ahmed said. “We’re proud to give back by bringing The Halal Guys’ fresh and bold cuisine to the place we call home.”

The menu will include the brand’s signature platters and sandwiches featuring falafel, chicken, or beef gyro, as well as desserts such as baklava and baklava cheesecakes. The Coralville location will also introduce The Halal Guys’ Chicken Wings, served with various sauce options, including their classic White Sauce.

The restaurant’s design pays homage to its New York City roots, with subway tiles, polished concrete floors, manhole covers and graffiti art, creating an urban aesthetic.

The Halal Guys began as a street cart in New York City in 1990, serving meals to taxi drivers and others seeking affordable, flavorful food. Over the years, it has expanded into a global franchise.
