Two Cedar Rapids nonprofits will host three free screenings of the documentary “UnCharitable” on Monday, Dec. 1 at the Cedar Rapids Public Library’s Whipple Auditorium.

The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation and United Way of East Central Iowa are presenting the film ahead of Giving Tuesday, a global day of charitable giving held Dec. 2.

Screenings will take place at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. The event is open to the public and does not require registration.

The documentary examines philanthropy practices and explores how removing traditional constraints on nonprofits can enable them to create change.

“The nonprofit sector is currently experiencing a lot of uncertainties,” said Kristin Roberts, president and CEO of United Way of East Central Iowa, in a release. “While nonprofits are facing an increased demand for services, they are also experiencing funding cuts and challenges with employee retention. Donors who care deeply about our communities are asking themselves how they can best help the nonprofits they love dearly. UnCharitable gives them a new perspective as to how they can be the most effective right now.”

The film addresses charity watchdog criticism of U.S. charitable campaigns and features Dan Pallotta, whose TED Talk on nonprofit sector operations has reached a global audience.

“This documentary addresses many myths about the nonprofit sector and introduces the concept of trust-based philanthropy,” said Karla Twedt-Ball, president and CEO at the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation. “By recognizing and trusting the experience and expertise of local nonprofits, we can truly partner with them and empower their ability to fulfill their missions.”

Ms. Twedt-Ball said organizers hope the screenings will encourage year-end giving to help nonprofits navigate current challenges.

The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation has assets totaling more than $229 million and over 1,000 charitable funds. United Way of East Central Iowa serves Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Jones and Linn counties.
