After seven years of producing contemporary and original theatre in Cedar Rapids, Mirrorbox Theatre will vacate its permanent space on Ellis Boulevard at the end of May, the organization announced on social media.

The decision follows recent leadership changes, including the April departure of founder Cavan Hallman from his roles as artistic director and president of the board of directors. Chelsea White has since been named to both positions.

The board cited financial sustainability as the primary reason for leaving the space. “Maintaining a permanent space is not financially viable for our organization,” the board’s statement said. “In order to ensure Mirrorbox can continue to produce raw, relevant, and daring productions, we must have the resources to do so.”

Mirrorbox moved into 1200 Ellis Blvd. NW, Cedar Rapids in 2022, establishing a home for its distinctive programming, which focused on Iowa-premiere contemporary plays. The venue became a gathering place for innovative productions, improv events, and the company’s annual holiday shows.

The departure also follows financial challenges that emerged in late 2024. In October, Mirrorbox launched a $30,000 fundraising campaign to cover back rent and maintain its location through the end of that year.

Despite this past fundraising effort, which did allow the theatre to remain in the space at the time, the board determined that maintaining a permanent venue was no longer sustainable.

Mirrorbox will continue its programming through the transition. The company plans to produce staged readings and an additional episode of The Rapids, its monthly improvised soap opera, before leaving the Ellis Boulevard space. Plans are also moving forward for the previously announced 2025 season of Big Box productions – though a venue has not yet been announced.

As the company prepares for its next phase, Mirrorbox is asking for continued community support through donations and volunteer efforts. More information is available at www.mirrorboxtheatre.com.

“We would like to thank the community for all of the support given over the years and everyone who has patronized our space on Ellis Blvd,” the board’s statement said. “It will be tough saying goodbye, but we are excited for the next chapter in Mirrorbox Theatre’s story.”
