Mercy Medical Center has been designated as a Dementia Friendly Organization by Dementia Friendly Iowa, becoming the largest healthcare organization in Iowa to receive the recognition, according to a news release.

The designation follows six months of training led by Mercy’s Dementia Champions, who provided education across the hospital and clinics to help staff recognize signs of dementia, communicate with patients and support families.

“Becoming dementia-friendly reinforces The Mercy Touch,” said Dr. Timothy Quinn, president and CEO of Mercy Medical Center. “It ensures that every encounter – from the bedside to the front desk and throughout every support department – demonstrates dignity, respect and compassion for all individuals we serve.”

More than 62,000 Iowans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s disease, representing about 11% of the state’s senior population, according to Mercy. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia.

As a Dementia Friendly Organization, Mercy will continue the work through its Dementia Friendly Ambassador Program, which focuses on ongoing education, reinforcement of best practices and support for patients, caregivers and the broader community.
