Loren Hartelt of CRST will become the new chair of the Downtown Cedar Rapids Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District (SSMID) commission on Jan. 1, 2026, succeeding James Klein, who has led the commission since 2023.
Mr. Hartelt brings extensive leadership experience and a deep commitment to the continued vitality of Downtown Cedar Rapids to the role. Through his position at CRST and his service on the commission, he has been an advocate for strengthening the district’s economic vibrancy, enhancing public spaces, and supporting the business community.
“We are excited to welcome Loren as our new chair,” said Caleb Knutson, executive director of Downtown Cedar Rapids in a statement. “His strategic perspective, collaborative approach, and passion for downtown development will be invaluable as we enter a pivotal that starts with our renewal process and continues our focus on the initiatives highlighted in the Downtown Vision Plan.”
The SSMID also recognized outgoing chair James Klein for his dedicated leadership. Under Mr. Klein’s tenure, the commission advanced key projects including the Cedar Rapids Sign, the Trolley Pilot, and other initiatives focused on public placemaking, beautification, and organizational structure.
The Downtown SSMID commission oversees investments that enhance the downtown experience for residents, businesses, and visitors. As chair, Mr. Hartelt will guide the commission’s strategic priorities and help shape the district’s future direction.
The leadership transition comes as the district enters its renewal process and continues implementing initiatives outlined in the Downtown Vision Plan.
