This August, Johnson County will begin the process of returning its services to the Administration Building at 913 S. Dubuque St. in Iowa City, which has undergone extensive remodeling since October 2023.

“Construction is nearing completion, resulting in a complete remodel of the interior, installation of new HVAC and fire suppression systems, as well as major accessibility upgrades and other service-centered improvements. This has created additional space for future county needs,” according to a statement from the county.

Since construction began last fall, the county has operated out of the Health and Human Services Building at 855 S. Dubuque St.

Funding for the project has been sourced through a combination of general funds and American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) federal funds with “a firm commitment that taxes will not be raised to finance the remodel,” according to the county.

As the moving date draws nearer, the county will share more detailed information regarding when specific departments will be relocated, and encourages residents to follow its Twitter and Facebook pages for quick access to specific updates and timelines.
