The Iowa City Downtown District is expanding its holiday programming with the launch of a five-week series of Friday night festivities aimed at boosting local businesses.

Festive Fridays will run 5 to 8 p.m. now until Dec. 19 and feature complimentary trolley service, vendor pop-ups, entertainment, refreshments and themed activities at various downtown locations.

“The introduction of Festive Fridays represents a significant expansion of our holiday programming,” said Katie Biegger, ICDD’s director of events. “By creating weekly touchpoints throughout the season, we’re providing more opportunities for residents and visitors to experience the unique character and warm hospitality that define Downtown Iowa City during the holidays. This weekly cadence creates a predictable, recurring opportunity for shoppers to explore downtown offerings in a festive atmosphere, helping local retailers maximize the holiday season while providing exceptional experiences for customers.”

The program launched Nov. 21, and each subsequent Friday brings different themes and vendors. FilmScene will provide popcorn and hot cocoa Dec. 5 at the Cocoa Cabin in Blackhawk Mini Park, while Dec. 12 includes a gingerbread house competition at Poindexter coffee shop, 210 S. Dubuque St. The series concludes Dec. 19 with live mannequin displays in storefront windows.

A free trolley will circulate on 10-to-15-minute intervals during each event, connecting downtown with surrounding neighborhoods. Blackhawk Mini Park will anchor activities with enhanced lighting, seasonal decor and cocktail tables, while the Cocoa Cabin will have rotating food and beverage vendors.

The park will also be the site of the Downtown Holiday Pop-Up Market, sponsored by GreenState Credit Union and featuring local artisans and small businesses. The market runs now through Dec. 24 with rotating vendors selling handmade goods, baked items, jewelry and artwork.

“Festive Fridays and our expanded holiday programming create meaningful opportunities to showcase the variety and quality of our downtown retailers and local makers,” said Christopher Hunter, ICDD’s director of marketing. “With weekly events, the Downtown Pop-Up Market, and extended hours, we’re making it easier for the community to shop local and experience everything downtown has to offer during the holiday season.”
