Iowa City Council unanimously voted on first consideration Jan. 24 to rezone the future site of a planned senior living community.
The applicant, Western Home Independent Living Services, is attempting to construct 35 single-family homes, eight duplex units, 38 multi-family units, 20 townhome-style multi-family units and an assisted living building with 32 beds.
The proposal also calls for improving Camp Cardinal Road to accomodate the 32-bed assisted living building and townhome-style units, according to agenda documents.
"This parcel allows us to create a community inside of the greater community of Iowa City," said Kris Hansen, CEO of Western Home Communities, during the meeting. "We work pretty closely with the University of Iowa and the school of nursing."
On Dec. 21, the Iowa City Planning and Zoning Commission approved the plan 6-0.
"I'm really pleased with this plan," said Iowa City Council member John Thomas. "The site plan was done with high sensitivity to the natural areas...toward trying to create a sense of neighborhood in its form."
Western Home Communities serves 1,400 residents, the majority coming from its Cedar Falls location. They offer in-home care, skilled nursing care, assisted living and independent living.
