Helix Electric Inc., a national electrical contracting firm, announced plans Wednesday to hire 400 workers to support “a new data center construction project in Cedar Rapids.”
The company didn’t specify the project, but two major data center projects are currently under construction in the Big Cedar Industrial Center in southwest Cedar Rapids — a Google data center and another data center project being developed by QTS.
In a release, Helix said it is recruiting for a range of positions, including licensed journeymen, commissioning technicians, safety managers, foremen, superintendents and project managers.
The hiring initiative marks Helix Electric’s expansion into Iowa and is part of “a multi-billion-dollar project expected to last at least two years.” Applications are currently open.
Founded in 1985, Helix Electric is based in California and is one of the largest merit-shop electrical contractors in the United States. The company was ranked No. 14 on Engineering News-Record’s 2024 list of top electrical firms. Its project portfolio includes complex design-build work, with expertise in mission-critical infrastructure like data centers.
“At Helix Electric, we pride ourselves on fostering a dynamic and inclusive work environment where safety and professional growth are paramount,” Chief Operating Officer Casey Long said in a press release. “We are thrilled to bring our expertise in data center construction to Iowa.”
The Cedar Rapids data center project contributes to Iowa’s growing digital infrastructure footprint. The state has seen increased investment from national technology companies in recent years, including more than $1 billion in approved data center developments statewide.
“Our team members are empowered with opportunities for continuous learning and advancement, making Helix not just a job, but a rewarding career path,” said Maria Anderson, director of talent. “Helix is dedicated to delivering safe, high-quality, and efficient electrical solutions that power today’s digital economy.”
Helix previously completed projects across the Midwest, including a 1.1 million-square-foot U.S. Air Force facility in Nebraska supporting national defense and satellite operations.
