A new initiative launched by the cities of Cedar Rapids, Marion and Hiawatha, in partnership with the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance, aims to attract remote workers to the region through a relocation incentive program.

The “MakeMyMove Greater Cedar Rapids” program, launched in coordination with the national MakeMyMove platform, offers more than $5,600 in incentives to qualified remote workers who relocate to the area. The package includes a $5,000 relocation payment, a free Economic Alliance membership, local parks and recreation vouchers, and additional community perks.

“This initiative is more than a move. It’s an invitation to join a connected, forward-thinking community,” said Jodi Schafer, talent attraction director at the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance. “We’re offering a soft landing and a warm welcome to those looking for their next chapter in a place where they can thrive personally and professionally.”

To qualify, applicants must be age 18 or older, currently reside outside Iowa, earn at least $55,000 annually, and work remotely either as a full-time employee or self-employed professional.

Selected applicants must relocate to Cedar Rapids, Marion or Hiawatha within six months.

The application process includes online submission, connection with a local Mover Guide, and access to relocation resources.

The effort is part of the broader Collaborative Growth Initiative, backed by $436,000 in combined funding from the mayors and city leadership of the three participating cities. The program is the first phase of a long-term talent attraction strategy, initially launched in August 2023, that will include job-mover campaigns, community branding, and a dedicated talent website.

“We’re not just attracting talent, we’re building community,” Ms. Schafer said. “MakeMyMove Greater Cedar Rapids aligns with our mission to support workforce growth, energize our cities, and create lasting connections for new residents.”
