The Walmart Supercenter at 3601 29th Ave. SW in Cedar Rapids will unveil its first major remodel since opening in 1999 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Friday, May 23.
The 205,000-square-foot store has undergone significant renovations over the past several months as part of Walmart’s investment in improving customer experience across Iowa, according to a company release.
The Cedar Rapids location is one of two Iowa Walmart Supercenters – along with the Ames store – celebrating completed remodels on the same day. In total, 10 Walmart locations in Iowa are scheduled for remodels in 2025.
“Our remodel represents a renewed commitment to the Cedar Rapids community and our customers,” store manager Jeff Frase said in a statement.

Updates at the store include expanded departments, wider aisles, and redesigned displays aimed at improving product visibility and accessibility. The fashion department has been updated with new selections, and the pharmacy area now features a private screening room and designated privacy checkout zones. A new mother’s room has also been added to serve families with young children.
A custom mural reflecting the Cedar Rapids community has been installed inside the grocery entrance, further integrating local culture into the store’s design.
The re-grand opening celebration will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, free food samples, and grant presentations to local nonprofit organizations.
Store associates, community members and local organizations are expected to attend.
