  • Grant Wood's decorative mural gracing Brucemore's sleeping porch is one of the few surviving examples of his interior design work, the nonprofit says.

Historic Cedar Rapids landmark Brucemore will celebrate the 100th anniversary of one of its most unique artistic treasures – the Grant Wood Sleeping Porch – with a daylong community event Aug. 16 highlighting Cedar Rapids’ art and history.

Commissioned in August 1925 by Irene Douglas, the decorative mural on the sleeping porch outside her youngest daughter’s bedroom remains one of the few surviving examples of Iowa artist Grant Wood’s interior design work.

The celebration will feature mansion tours, live music, art activities and presentations on Mr. Wood’s life and work from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Birthday cupcakes and snacks will be served from 4 to 6 p.m.

Art supplies for the event are provided by Blick Art Materials. For a complete itinerary, visit https://www.brucemore.org/event/grant-wood-porch-birthday-party/.
