The Big Bang Foundation, a nonprofit focused on youth empowerment, announced plans Tuesday for the launch of the AI Micro Park, a solar-powered educational hub set to open in August 2025 in the Wellington Heights neighborhood in Cedar Rapids.

Located at 605 15th St. SE, the AI Micro Park, a free community space, will offer young people hands-on learning experiences in artificial intelligence, coding, digital media and green technology.

Foundation leaders say the park is designed to bridge the digital divide and provide equitable access to emerging technologies.

The park will feature a two-level AI Creator Lab built from repurposed shipping containers, along with virtual reality and 3D printing tools. Additional features will include outdoor AI kiosks equipped with systems like Gemini and ChatGPT, public Wi-Fi, a 1.5-kilowatt rooftop solar array, an IoT-enabled community garden with an augmented reality learning trail, and security cameras linked to the Cedar Rapids Police Department.

“The AI Micro Park is more than just a space; it’s a launchpad for the next generation of innovators, thinkers and community leaders right here in Cedar Rapids,” said Chuck Crawley, co-founder and executive director of the Big Bang Foundation.

The initiative builds on the foundation’s past community work, including the “Lights On” youth mentorship program at McKinley Middle School and the Iowa Summer Jam festival.

“We believe in turning lots into labs and ideas into tangible impact,” said Jorel Robinson, co-founder and strategy and partnerships lead. “The AI Micro Park is a community-driven solution, built with the support of local expertise and a passion for Cedar Rapids.”

The Big Bang Foundation is seeking additional community partners and support to complete the project. For more information, visit the project’s website at www.theaipark.com
