Owner Vanorny Consulting Council member District 5, Cedar Rapids AGE: 36 What was your first job? Courtesy clerk at Hy-Vee. Best advice you ever received? To believe in myself and give myself compassion and grace. Failure will happen as a part of growth. What do you consider your biggest break so far? Winning a run-off election as the second youngest person to serve Iowa’s second largest city and completing my master’s in health care administration.  What would most people be surprised to learn about you? I’m introverted. I love serving people, but I recharge my batteries by gardening, reading, and quietly reflecting. What’s the biggest issue facing the Corridor, and why? Intentionally engaging up-and-coming leaders and making space for them. Far too often, things are prescribed to us without putting us at the table and asking what we need and could use to grow in our careers.  If you had $1 million to give, what causes would you support? Fighting food insecurity. We have far too many people who are food insecure in our community. What are your passions outside of the workplace? Voting rights, women’s rights, fighting food and housing insecurity, social justice, gardening, hiking/exploring and the arts community. What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace? We have been adults for more than half our life and still have inequities in representation and leadership. We are often told to wait our turn, to pay our dues, but we have so much to give and are valid in our leadership as we are.  What do you want to accomplish by the time you are 50? I hope to make a difference in improving the quality of life for my community in the spaces of housing, food security and wellness.
