The African American Museum of Iowa will open a new exhibit Oct. 17 exploring the connection between Black communities and agriculture.
“Rooted: Labor, Land, & Legacy” examines farming’s role in Black communities’ efforts toward economic independence, cultural preservation and self-determination. The exhibit will feature Black farmers nationwide and in Iowa who are using agriculture to reclaim land, promote sustainability and address environmental and economic inequalities.
The exhibit will run through Aug. 8, 2026.
The African American Museum of Iowa is a statewide museum dedicated to preserving, exhibiting and teaching Iowa’s African American history. The museum educates more than 30,000 people annually through in-person and virtual museum tours, traveling exhibits, research services, youth and adult education programs, and community and fundraising events.
