Washington residents and business leaders will soon have the chance to learn how their community is viewed through the eyes of first-time visitors. The insights will be shared during the upcoming First Impressions Community Forum, part of a statewide program aimed at helping Iowa towns strengthen tourism, attract new residents and enhance quality of life.
The forum will take place at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Washington Community Library’s Nicola Stouffer Room, 115 W. Washington St. The event is open to all community members, including residents, businesses, attractions, natural resource partners, local leaders and community organizations.
Over a span of several months, a trained team of assessors visited Washington as part of the First Impressions evaluation. Team members conducted online research, reviewed local websites and social media, and made unannounced visits to experience the community firsthand. The forum will present their observations and recommendations.
“This is a valuable opportunity to hear more about the experiences assessment team members had in Washington,” said Ann Vogelbacher, state tourism specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach – Community Economic Development. “This feedback can inspire new ideas, strengthen local initiatives, and guide future planning efforts for your community.”
The Washington Chamber of Commerce applied for the assessment at the start of 2025 in partnership with Washington’s Tourism Advisory Committee, which funded the initiative. Washington was one of five communities selected statewide through a competitive application process.
“Washington, Iowa, is a place of rich history, vibrant culture, and boundless opportunities for both residents and visitors alike. We take great pride in our community and are dedicated to continually enhancing its appeal,” said Erik Buchholz, 2024 chamber board president. “Our town offers a diverse range of attractions and activities that showcase the best of what Washington has to offer. By identifying our strengths and areas for improvement, we can work together to ensure that everyone who visits our town leaves with lasting memories and a desire to return.”
The assessment examines factors such as hospitality, customer service, community vitality, infrastructure, visitor services and overall appeal. Findings are compiled into a comprehensive report with actionable recommendations specific to Washington.
The First Impressions program is a partnership between Iowa communities, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach – Community Economic Development, and the Iowa Economic Development Authority/Iowa Tourism Office. The forum is hosted by the Washington Chamber of Commerce, Washington’s Tourism Advisory Committee (Hotel/Motel Tax Fund Administration Committee) and the Washington First Impressions Committee.
