University of Iowa Health Care has appointed Dr. Bevan Yueh as its first chief physician executive, a new leadership position aimed at unifying clinical operations across the growing health system. Dr. Yueh will begin the role on July 31, pending approval by the Iowa Board of Regents.

In addition to his executive duties, Dr. Yueh will join the UI Carver College of Medicine as a professor in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.

The appointment comes as UI Health Care expands services to meet the needs of more patients statewide, a release stated. Leaders say Dr. Yueh will provide system-wide oversight for hospitals, physician groups, and future care sites. He will report directly to Dr. Denise Jamieson, vice president for medical affairs and dean of the Carver College of Medicine.

“Dr. Yueh is a nationally recognized physician leader who will bring a fresh vision for improving operations across our entire clinical care enterprise,” Dr. Jamieson said. “I’m excited to welcome him to UI Health Care and partner with him to further develop our system-wide clinical standards as we evolve as a clinical care enterprise. Working together with clinicians and leaders across the organization, we want to continue to improve access for Iowans and create a more seamless, coordinated patient care experience that aligns with our mission, vision and values.”

Dr. Yueh currently serves as vice dean for clinical affairs at the University of Minnesota Medical School and CEO of University of Minnesota Physicians. A surgeon specializing in head and neck cancer, he previously chaired Minnesota’s Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.

Beyond the operating room, Dr. Yueh is an expert in clinical epidemiology and health services research. His work focuses on hearing health and improving quality of life after head and neck cancer treatment.

Dr. Yueh earned his medical degree from Stanford University and completed his residency and fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. He also holds a Master of Public Health from Yale, where he completed a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar research fellowship.

Throughout his career, Dr. Yueh has received numerous honors, including repeated recognition as a “Top Doctor” by Mpls.St. Paul Magazine, “Best Doctor” by Minnesota Monthly, and inclusion on the “Best Doctors in America” list.

A prominent figure in his field, Dr. Yueh is president-elect of the American Head and Neck Society and a former president of the Association of Academic Departments of Otolaryngology. He serves as a senior examiner for the American Board of Otolaryngology and has advised both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

Dr. Yueh also contributes to the academic community as a journal editor and former associate editor of JAMA Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.
