The Halal Guys, a New York City-based restaurant chain that specializes in Middle Eastern casual cuisine, announced it is opening a new location in Coralville. “We are very excited to bring The Halal Guys to the Midwest!” said Jordan Lynch, senior marketing manager for The Halal Guys, in an email to the CBJ, but added that the company does not have an official start date. An exact location in Coralville was not given. The Halal Guys was started a little over 30 years ago by Egyptian founders Abdelbaset Elsayed, Mohamed Abouelenein, and Ahmed Elsaka, who sold halal food out of a food cart to New York City Muslim taxi drivers, eventually opening a brick-and-mortar location in 2014. According to The Halal Guys website, there are over 400 chains in development worldwide, but none currently in Iowa. The closest chain is in Kansas City, Missouri. Menu specialties include beef or chicken gyros, platters, falafel, hummus, baby ghanoush and baklava. Platters include basmati rice, fresh pitas, and grilled, seasoned halal chicken and/or beef.
