A plan to replace damaged windows at the Stead Family Children's Hospital for $45 million was approved by the Board of Regents Wednesday. Project planning began in April 2021 to replace windows on levels four and five, but window replacement is now necessary on levels three through 11, according to agenda documents. Originally estimated at one-third of the cost compared to the price cited during the Board of Regents meeting, a news report from UI Health Care in 2021 said replacement windows would cost between $10-15 million. The report said funds would come from the hospital's "patient care revenue" and reimbursement from contractors. In June, the university announced a lawsuit against Cupples Construction and Knutson Construction, in a press conference to local media. The university claimed they installed defective windows. The university is advancing with legal arbitration, Rod Lehnertz, senior vice president for finance and operations at the University of Iowa, said to the Board of Regents. Construction on the children's hospital windows would start in the spring through fall 2025. Operations within the hospital are said to be minimized. The project will replace windows, install safety film and replace the bridge windows. UIHC's new North Liberty hospital, now totaling $525,628,000, is a 33% increase from previously released budgets.

Upgraded elevator bank

The university also approved a project description and budget for upgrading the UIHC Elevator D Bank for $4.7 million. The elevator machinery was last upgraded more than 40 years ago. The elevators serve the lower level through level eight. It will be funded by hospital building usage funds.
