What do you consider your biggest break so far? Three lucky breaks come to mind. Being fortunate enough to meet my wife way back in after-school weightlifting as a sophomore at Iowa City West High. Another is the great hand I was dealt – being born and raised in Iowa City to a loving family that gave me many opportunities. But finally, professionally, when a small civil engineering firm in Evergreen, Colorado, reached out to me. They saw potential in me even though, at the time, I was working in construction. CenterPoint Integrated Solutions (CPIS) helped me achieve stability and exposure to all that I love doing in my career today with Shive-Hattery.
What’s the biggest issue facing the Corridor, and why? Fostering a culture of collaboration in the Corridor is a huge issue. Too often our communities and metros clash, which doesn’t lend itself to improvement and growth in the area. Lack of open-mindedness will only lead to marginal improvements in our lives, at best.
If you had $1 million to give, what causes would you support? I would invest in the Community Foundation of Johnson County.
What are your passions outside of the workplace? My favorite thing in this world is being called dad. All that entails — family vacations, eating at local favorites, cheering in the stands at softball games, volunteer coaching, bike rides to the local brewery, game days at Kinnick and walking our dog, Ada.
What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace? I often find myself being the “token millennial in the room” as my generation is generically discussed. I’d emphasize caution against applying broad stroke characterizations based on the latest article or social media post (similarly for other generations/demographics). Individuals are just that, individuals, and vary quite a lot in their preferences and skill sets.
What would most people be surprised to learn about you? I enjoy alternative rock and am always down to mosh pit at a concert. I also am a huge fan of dad jokes, though my daughter (Cora, 7) is already thoroughly embarrassed by them. When does a joke become a dad joke, you may ask? When the punch line becomes apparent.
