Nearly 700 participate in Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Cedar Rapids

    Nearly 700 residents joined the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Sept. 20 at Kingston Yard, raising approximately $130,000 to support the Alzheimer’s Association’s care, support and research programs.

    The top fundraising team was To Honor Tom, led by Walk Committee member Justina Dunlap, who raised more than $10,000 in memory of her husband, Tom.

    Other top fundraisers included:

    Team Dearborn, led by Teresa Dusil, which raised more than $10,000 in memory of family members lost to the disease.

    Team Meth-Wick Community, led by Andrea Santacroce, which raised more than $7,000 in honor of families affected in their community.

    Theresa Hunt, the top individual walker, who raised more than $5,000 in honor of her Uncle Eddie and Bob.

    More than 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, a leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. More than 11 million family members and friends provide care for those with Alzheimer’s or other dementias. In Iowa, more than 62,000 people are living with the disease, supported by 80,000 caregivers.

    The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event dedicated to raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. The Alzheimer’s Association has organized the walk since 1989.
