There’s a new place to say “I do” in Swisher. Featuring a large courtyard area, covered patio, grand hall capable of holding 300 guests, gazebo and a putting green, Alex and Jordan Nelson want the Midnight Gem at 2613 Ders Drive to offer once-in-a-lifetime experiences to Corridor couples. The wedding venue’s name comes from its black color concept on the building’s exterior. Already under construction by builders Halo Companies and financier GreenState Credit Union, the married couple says more than 50 weddings are booked in the new venue, set to open in October. They hope the Midnight Gem will provide a different atmosphere than other event centers in the region, and is to be designed with bridal and groom suites on opposite sides. YouTube video player “Jordan and I got married about three years ago and we toured all of the venues around the area,” said Alex. “We just saw a need for a different kind of space. We’re planning on a different vibe, like a modern industrial [vibe] versus a lot of the barn and farmhouse feels, and then we’re really big on indoor and outdoor spaces as well, which we think is different for the area.” They also believe the Midnight Gem’s location is conveniently located between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids residents, with the venue being just off the highway and in close proximity to the Eastern Iowa Airport. While the finish line is in sight now, the destination was not always as clear due to supply chain setbacks and product inflation. “We’ve definitely had our fair share of ups and downs,” Alex said. “We’ve been planning this since mid-2020, so we’ve overcome that aspect. But now we are good to go with doors and windows already ordered.” Weddings are booked through fall 2023 but they think the venue is perfectly suited for corporate events, baby showers, birthday parties and live events. Rental prices for Fridays-Sundays begin at $4,500. “We just want to be as affordable as possible and just really care about these couples to hold a good wedding day for them,” Jordan said. “Everything is included in one price versus nickel and diming people and charging them for every decoration,” Alex added.
