Mediacom Communications has completed multi-gig and symmetrical speed broadband upgrades in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, expanding the company’s upgraded service to 200,000 additional homes and businesses.

According to a news release, the upgrades were completed using new technology that builds upon Mediacom’s existing fiber-rich network architecture without requiring the company to dig up yards, add bulky equipment, or bury new cables. The improvements deliver faster upload and download speeds, enhanced reliability, secure connections, and lower latency.

Upgrades are now underway in suburban areas surrounding Des Moines. Combined with projects in Mediacom’s Delaware, Maryland, Florida Panhandle, Metro Minneapolis, and Quad Cities markets, the company expects to offer enhanced broadband services to 1 million households by the end of 2026.

Residents can track project progress using an interactive mapping tool. Upgraded areas will have access to three Xtream Internet tiers: Internet 300 with speeds of 300 Mbps down and 100 Mbps up; Internet 1 Gig Symmetrical with speeds of 1000 Mbps down and 1000 Mbps up; and Internet 2 Gig Unlimited with speeds of 2000 Mbps down and 1000 Mbps up.

The network improvements will allow Mediacom to increase speeds from the current one and two gigabit offerings to speeds of 10 gigabits per second and beyond in the coming years.

“We are incredibly excited to bring these game-changing technology enhancements to the residents of Des Moines and Cedar Rapids,” said Steve Purcell, Group VP of Mediacom’s Capital Region. “We look forward to launching multi-gig and symmetrical service options to even more Iowa communities in the near future.”

Mediacom will continue to offer Xtream Connect, a low-cost broadband plan with speeds of 100 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up. Priced at $14.99 per month plus modem rental, if applicable, Xtream Connect is available to qualifying households that participate in the National School Lunch Program, SNAP, Medicaid, Federal Public Housing Assistance, SSI, WIC, or certain other federal programs.

Mediacom Communications Corporation is the fifth largest cable operator in the United States and offers high-speed data, video, phone, and mobile services to over 3 million households and businesses across 22 states.
