Linn County Rural Electric Cooperative (REC) will rebrand as Corridor Energy Cooperative effective Dec. 8, the utility has announced.
The cooperative cited several factors driving the name change, including a membership that has shifted significantly from its rural origins since the co-op’s founding in 1938.
Today, 65% of the cooperative’s members live within city limits, and more than 55% reside in Johnson County, according to the announcement. The Linn County REC serves six counties across Eastern Iowa.
Removing “rural” from the name will help the utility compete for large commercial and industrial customers, which could help lower costs for all members, the cooperative said. The rebrand also aims to position the utility as current with evolving energy technologies, including distributed energy resources and advanced grid systems.
The cooperative’s ownership structure, rates and service commitment will remain unchanged under the new name.
The utility will update signage, billing statements and marketing materials ahead of the December launch. A new website will debut at that time.
