The Linn County Planning & Zoning Commission will consider a rezoning application for the Duane Arnold Energy Center at their Dec. 15 meeting, marking the first opportunity for public comment on the proposal to restart the nuclear power facility.

The commission will meet at 6 p.m. at the Jean Oxley Linn County Public Service Center, 935 Second St. SW in Cedar Rapids. The panel will make a recommendation to the Linn County Board of Supervisors following the hearing.

All rezoning applications in the county undergo review by the Technical Review Committee, the Planning & Zoning Commission and three readings by the Board of Supervisors. The process evaluates applications against development standards in Linn County’s zoning code ordinance related to nuclear energy and elements of the Linn County Comprehensive Plan. The Technical Review Committee met to review the application Dec. 4.

Application documents submitted by the Duane Arnold Energy Center are available at LinnCountyIowa.gov/NuclearEnergy.

Public comment will be accepted during the Dec. 15 meeting with time limits. Comments can be submitted in advance to [email protected] and will be summarized publicly at the meeting by county staff.

The Board of Supervisors will review the rezoning application in a series of public meetings in January. Meeting dates will be announced in coming weeks. The board has final authority on rezoning applications in unincorporated Linn County.

The Duane Arnold Energy Center application will also require approval from multiple state and federal regulatory authorities, including the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, before a restart can occur.
