Johnson County businesses and solar energy advocates have teamed up to form the Johnson County Solar Task Force, an initiative aiming to ensure the county derives 10% of its energy from small-scale solar power by 2035.

Small-scale solar projects such as rooftop and ground-mounted arrays can help reduce energy costs, lower carbon emissions, increase local energy resilience and create economic opportunities, the task force asserts.

“With new technologies like microgrids and community solar on the horizon, there are more pathways than ever for businesses and homeowners to access clean energy solutions,” a release from Greater Iowa City, Inc. stated.

The launch comes on the heels of MidAmerican Energy’s announcement of an ambitious solar energy project that is estimated to span 4,800 acres at six Iowa sites through 2027 and 2028. Projected to produce up to 800 megawatts of power for 144,000 homes, the project will generate nearly $25 million in property tax revenue and $270 million in landowner lease payments over its lifespan, the company says.

In Johnson County, MidAmerican is eyeing approximately 900 acres for a 150 megawatt solar project, called the Johnson County Solar Triangle.

The public is invited to the Johnson County Solar Task Force’s official launch March 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Coralville Public Library, 1401 Fifth St.

At the event, local businesses, residents and nonprofits that utilize solar energy will share their experiences, followed by a Q&A with panelists and an opportunity to participate with the initiative.

Over the next few months, the task force will be sharing information and ideas through educational seminars and forums, including monthly Solar Energy Breakfasts, the release stated.

Homeowners, businesses, non-profits, consumers, builders, land developers, installers, financial institutions and others are invited to participate.
