Iowa City has opened applications for a new grant program aimed at improving commercial properties in four urban districts.

The Building Change Grant Program offers 50/50 matching funds for façade improvements, accessibility upgrades, energy efficiency projects and space reactivation at commercial buildings in downtown, the Northside Marketplace, Riverfront Crossings and the Towncrest Urban Renewal Area.

The program includes two funding tiers. The Step Up tier provides $10,000 to $50,000 for façade renovations, accessibility upgrades and space reactivation projects. The Power Up tier offers up to $100,000 for projects with substantial energy efficiency improvements.

Most projects require a minimum total cost of $20,000, though no minimum applies for projects focused solely on energy efficiency or accessibility improvements.

“High-quality, usable building stock is a cornerstone of a thriving community,” said Rachel Kilburg, economic development coordinator. “This program is designed to help property owners and tenants invest in improvements that preserve historic character, strengthen economic vitality, and create welcoming, sustainable spaces.”

Downtown properties planning storefront improvements may also apply for the Iowa City Downtown District’s CoSign+ program, with those funds counting toward the required 50% local match if awarded.

Property owners or tenants with owner consent can apply. Grants will be reimbursed after project completion based on verified costs. Applications will be evaluated competitively on project impact, improvement type, total investment, architectural fit and historic preservation.

Greater Iowa City Inc.’s MERGE Business Resource Center is offering free one-on-one consultations with architects during the application period to help applicants develop project scopes and strengthen applications.

Applications are due at 3 p.m. Nov. 17. More information is available at www.icgov.org/BCGP or by contacting Rachel Kilburg Varley at 319-356-5248 or [email protected].
