Iowa City City Councilor Andrew Dunn has announced his resignation from city council following two years of service.
In an announcement on Mr. Dunn’s Facebook page Oct. 29, he expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve the community and work in partnership with colleagues, emphasizing a commitment to fostering a stronger, more resilient community.
“It has been an honor to serve the people of Iowa City and to work toward a vision of a community that exemplifies our progressive values of inclusivity, sustainability, and genuine care for one another,” said Mr. Dunn, in the statement. “I am proud of the progress we have made together and am confident the council will continue to build upon these achievements.”
Mr. Dunn cited increased “professional obligations” within the labor movement as his reason for departure.
“Heading into 2025, I expect these obligations and associated travel out of town to increase. I want to ensure that Iowa Citians get the representation they deserve,” he said.
Mr. Dunn expressed pride in Iowa City’s progress during his tenure, emphasizing the city’s efforts to support working families through investments in affordable housing, underrepresented businesses, and the establishment of the Iowa City Fare Free public transit system.
“Although I am stepping down from this role, my commitment to Iowa City and its residents remains unwavering. I look forward to witnessing the continued success of our community and supporting its progress in any way I can,” he said.
The City Council will work with city officials to address the process for filling the vacancy created by Councilor Dunn’s departure, which is effective Jan. 1, 2025. Mr. Dunn represents Iowa City District C.
