As the global synthetic biology market prepares for annual growth exceeding 17% through 2030, Integrated DNA Technologies (IDT) is expanding its role in the industry by launching a new custom solutions program designed to speed up innovation and reduce development bottlenecks.

IDT’s newly announced white glove manufacturing service enables companies to collaborate directly with its in-house experts on synthetic biology projects ranging from large-scale initiatives to single-need custom requests.

According to a release, the program provides tailored design-build-test services, moving beyond IDT’s traditional catalog offerings to deliver more specialized, flexible solutions.

“With the fast-paced nature of synthetic biology innovation, we know that off-the-shelf products can limit complex research,” said Sandy Ottensmann, vice president and general manager of Gene Writing and Editing at IDT. “With our custom solutions program, researchers can lean on the strength of IDT’s scientific expertise and tailor-made synthetic biology capabilities as a catalyst for their innovation. This program was designed specifically for specialized customer endeavors, to enable them to truly discover what’s possible.”

During its pilot phase, the program reviewed more than 35 opportunities and enabled customer workflows on more than half. The service is supported by a dedicated team of scientists and engineers, along with custom lab and manufacturing space within IDT’s 25,000-square-foot synthetic biology facility in Coralville, which opened in May 2024.

The program can accommodate a wide range of synthetic biology needs, including:

  • High-yield or labeled non-standard gene fragments
  • Complex genes
  • Non-standard length genes over 5 kilobases
  • Cloned genes tailored to specialized cell lines
  • Multi-site cloning

By eliminating rigid high-throughput constraints and offering collaborative flexibility, IDT says it can deliver faster turnaround times and empower customers to iterate more quickly on their discoveries.

IDT, a Danaher company, has grown from an oligonucleotide manufacturer into a global genomics leader. Headquartered in Coralville, it partners with scientists and public health institutions worldwide to advance genomic research and innovation.
