The Iowa City Downtown District’s Holiday Kids’ Market will return for its fifth season Nov. 4-26, with an extended schedule that includes three no-school days.

The market, sponsored by GreenState Credit Union, allows children to shop for gifts while following a budget set by their parents or guardians. During 40-minute appointments, kids select and wrap presents with help from volunteers while parents shop or visit nearby businesses.

Shopping appointments run daily from 10:15 a.m. to 6 p.m., with limited walk-in slots available. The market will operate from Black Hawk Mini Park, next to Iowa Artisans Gallery. Items sourced from local Downtown District businesses range from $5 to $75, and participating retailers are reimbursed for items sold.

“There is no better way to teach kids about being responsible and managing a budget while allowing them the freedom to select thoughtful gifts for their loved ones,” said Tara Wachendorf, president of the GreenState Foundation and vice president and public relations director for GreenState Credit Union.

Advanced reservations are recommended through downtowniowacitymarket.com, as appointments typically fill quickly.

“Seeing kids discover the fun of cooking and sharing food inspires everything we do,” said Kevin and Susan Felker, co-owners of Prairie Kitchen Store. “It’s a chance to celebrate community and the simple pleasure of making something together.”
