His Hands Free Clinic has received 9,725 pairs of shoes so far toward the clinic’s goal of breaking the current Guinness Book of World record of 250,001 pairs collected in one week.
His Hands development director Dawn Brouwers estimates that at least 18,000 more pairs of shoes will be donated today (June 21) as part of the clinic’s shoe collection drive.
“The key to our success will be the Balloon Glow,” Ms. Brouwers said. “That event attracts 15,000 to 30,000 people. If everyone brings seven to 10 pairs of shoes, we can exceed our goal.”
If the Balloon Glow event Saturday, June 22 is canceled, His Hands will be collecting shoes at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 1285 Third Ave. SE.
His Hands continues to accept gently used shoes, boots, Crocs, sandals and flip flops. Shoes should be free of holes or rips as part of the shoe collection drive.
Single shoes, Wheelies, ice skates and roller blades cannot be accepted. If possible, rubber band pairs together.
Ms. Brouwers expressed thanks to the community business partners that have supported the His Hands shoe collection drive.
“The generosity of the Cedar Rapids area is amazing,” Ms. Brouwers said. “The quality of shoes donated has been incredible. Thank you so much to everyone who has taken the time to drop off shoes and volunteer their time so far.”
His Hands Free Clinic, located at 1245 Second Ave. SE, was established in 1992 and provides health care services for Eastern Iowa residents without health insurance.
